Diana Breslin, a professor of human development and family sciences at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, who studies the development of gender expression, said transgender and gender nonconforming children should be able to play, dress, and be themselves.

But she said she thinks it is unlikely that a young child at home will be as accepting of transgender or gender nonconforming children as an adult. "Some parents will come to a point where they don't want their child to be transgender or gender nonconforming— and that's fine, that's the parents' decision, " Breslin said.
